So, from what I’ve been seeing it looks like Gaim is bringing mythology like Norse’s golden apples and evolution.

Now with evolution, I saw a picture set about Ryouma discussing true evolution is about…

I knooooow!  And all the different team costumes/styles and the weird thing of having to stake claimed territory was a fun-if-silly callback to the warring states thing and so it even fitted in with the samurai themed armour and then with the neutral point being Bandou’s fruit cafe, there we have the fruit thing and can justify it out from there.

But then just dropping it (and with such a poorly-directed unified dance number, too) was just baaaad.  I mean, we still hear about them but until parents start cracking down on dancing, Footloose-style, because they believe the Beat Riders are the source of the Inves somehow (thus entrenching the youth vs. adulthood dichotomy which Our Hero Kouta could solve), they’re pretty much non-entities unless the writing crew really pulls something out about ‘em.

As you say, though, if they aren’t going to use them as anything but a disposable way to set our characters’ basic conflicts into motion, why even bother?  Might as well have it be something related to school or just jump straight into the fruit samurai-ing.  Maybe doing parallel timelines or something of Before (just kids finding weird toys) and After (generals leading armies of used-to-be-people against one another) or something?

You are SO not alone in wishing Akira was more involved in the story, too.  That she works for Yggdrasil was just pointed out to me not long ago and I just keep wondering why that hasn’t already become a major point of contention, if only because “I know what you look like when you’re a superhero and you’re the one attacking that building and all those nice people I know who work there, how could you, you monster?” would be a freaking amazing way to go with the plot and actually involve people questioning Kouta’s actions without a transparently eeeeeeevil/pissing contest-y/manipulative ulterior motive behind them, thus making the audience have to question if what he’s doing is right.

And, guh, even talking about OOO and Kuuga in this context is really depressing because both of them did such a better job talking about what doing violence, having it done to you and being in its proximity can do to people than Gaim does.  I often feel like Gaim is really trying to (here’s one of my critical catchphrases for long-running series taken over by new people) mimic the form of some of the better Kamen Rider series without really understanding how you make a thing like that work.  Lots of monster fights, lots of apocalyptic threats but no sense that the protagonist is involved even a little.

Really makes me want to go back and watch Madoka (which I apparently need to do anyway) as it, like Gaim, is an example of a long-running genre and see how it handles things compared to how Gaim's been working.  I've heard Madoka praised as alternately a deconstruction and apotheosis of the magical girl genre and it’s kinda fascinating to me that the same writer who did that could do something so thin and bland and lifeless when it comes to a genre whose inner workings are largely the same as my understanding of the magical girl.

I’m going to start Madoka when this Spring semester is over to see about it. This person (beware of spoilers at link) wrote up a write up that said it’s sort of “accidental feminist” in that it can be interpreted as such but that may have not been the intent.

The other thing is, like someone suggested a while back, is that he’s not good at writing a near 50 episode series compared to 13 episodes of Madoka. Not to mention it doesn’t look to be too crowded with characters and not as merchandise heavy as Kamen Rider is.

As for Akira, I think people forget her name partly because the show doesn’t do much with her. I’ve already said she could have been used as a parallel with Takatora but it’s like she just existed to espouse some advice and leave.

For someone who watched a bit of Madoka to the point where I referenced that shit heavily in The End of Ends liveblog, I can say that it isn’t too crowded with characters. Merchandise-heavy, on the other hand, with some manga continuations (Kazuki Magica and Oriko Magica, the latter of which focused on an alternate timeline of the actual series), plus the movies (two of which were compilations, the third…is, to me, the absolute worst thing of the franchise with an ending that pissed me off hardcore), and the toys…while it isn’t merchandise-heavy in the show itself, the certain other third movie, which is also a continuation of the show, feels so blatant with its ending it practically feels like they’re trying to milk the cow dry.

…kinda like Den-O, now that I think about it.

Sorry for being vague, but I’m trying my damnest to not share any spoilers.

Normally I would agree with you completely, although Orion has instantly become my favorite character via us getting to see his complete backstory and motivation.

I fear that this will be the end of Orion as an actual character and he’ll be token alien friend from now on.

Aww. But he was the best thing (so far)! Even with the new haircut!

And Another Thing

Okay, reading up on more of JDF’s stuff, and, well…I honestly wish I would have the power to retract every single damn positive thing I’ve said about the guy. Even if My Morphin’ Life was more out of excitement of seeing the other veteran Rangers than JDF.

That said, I’m just glad that other…

Wait. What?

I’ll PM you with what’s going down.

That said, I’m just glad that other Rangers aren’t real douches. Even those who showed up in the team-up? Like Selwyn, or Melody, or my usual favorite, or even Jason Faunt (despite me making cracks about his…less-than-stellar movie/video game choices)? I’m honestly feeling quite sorry for all of them. They probably don’t really know what’s truly up, which, you know, is kinda fine. No need for them to stick their noses into things.

So does that mean we can make a list of “S#!t JDF Says” things now?

By the way…when I chose who would be the Legendary Rangers for my liveblogs, the reason why I selected Dan was largely because of that interview he did. The one where he thought Ziggy/Dillon was weird, and more people should do Scott/Dillon, or something like that.

He just seems like one of those actors who would go “WTF?” on bad fanfictions.

Never forget the time that Dan Ewing in an interview stated how weirded out he was by Dillon/Ziggy and said Dillon/Scott made more sense.

And that’s how I started to like the guy, even though I did not care about RPM.

I wish someone would interview him and Eka together. Heck, just Eka in general since the dude is so chiller than his character, Scott, is.

Oh, Gods, that would be intriguing.

Plus, have massive props for Eka in general. Again, don’t really care for RPM, but I can’t help but respect a guy who would do a team-up (voice-over and under a pseudonym, sure, but still) with the next team. And for someone who watched Clash of the Red Rangers, while the story’s “meh”, his acting’s not that bad.
